The Government should establish a National Environment Reporting Act, says Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment Jan Wright. “It is important as the international focus on the environment starts to have a significant effect on consumer choice and as our trading partners test us in terms of their environmental accounting and begin to ask whether New Zealand can truly justify its sales pitch.” (more…)

AgResearch has been granted approval to continue genetic modification research using human DNA on goats, sheep, and cattle to produce human therapeutic proteins in milk. ERMA sad it considered the main benefit of the approved research would be an increase in scientific knowledge and the capacity for innovation in the country, according to the Otago Daily Times. Kiwi companies looking to sell their wares in the US are being told to tone down the clean green headlines and instead push issues of quality, local craftsmanship and community responsibility. Research conducted by the Seattle-based Hartman Group for New Zealand Trade and Enterprise shows Americans have only an “entry level” understanding of sustainability, and are not familiar with terms such as “food miles” or “traceability”. says The Herald.
